Erstein is a small town of 10 000 inhabitants. It is located 20 km South of Strasbourg and 5 km from the Rhine River which makes up the German border.
On the Eastern side in Germany there is the Black Forest and on the Western side in France there are the Vosges Mountains. Both offer great walking tracks.
Erstein is in the centre of "The Ried", a flat marshy area with abundant wildlife. There are numerous rivers and cycling tracks in close proximity.
